More unexploded shells found at portsea

This month's shelling comes just weeks after the island lost 20 ships to rebel shelling earlier this year â five of them in particular â but experts say that in total the death toll in the attack would be much higher due to the nature of the attacks, as well as the fact that not all shells hit where they should have.

"It's very important that we remember that this is a very small part of the number of ships that went down with this strike," says Chris Brown, a senior naval officer from the US navy's 5th Fleet in the Gulf of Aden.

The recent destruction of a French warship in January led to a sharp drop in the number of incidents that would normally trigger the deployment of an entire squadron. "What would happen if we had a 10, 15, 20 or 30 crew member being shot down," Brown says, "that would be a lot worse than what we're doing now."

US commanders admit that these losses may seem small in comparison with other conflicts but they are certainly worrying. For one thing, the US naval base at Port Martha has become a haven for insurgents from the Yemen conflict since the Houthis came to power, although Brown admits that while they have "a history of operating from here, that has not changed" and that his own forces had had "no real operational impact" in the port until this month's action.

"I think what you'll see more of now will be, 'I've got three guys in the corner, trying to fire their weapons but there's an explosion on my ship', or 'I've got two guys and they've gone down with something, now we're trying to find out what happened,'" Brown adds. "The people there may take time to get used to this".

The loss of ships to a specific location â particularly that of a military vessel â means that the US Navy's efforts to protect vital strategic targets such as ports, ports or harbors all around the world will be severely compromised.

"The real question you're going to want to ask is: how many ships will have been destroyed and what are the cost-savings they can derive for our national security? Are they using port lifeboats?" Brown asks. "You may have this small island with a million people around it that you need to protect, and that may be an insignificant number of boats, but that small group of boats could be vital to our national security."

But whether or not the increased activity along the Yemeni coast is a sign of US resolve to keep fighting after an overall decrease in combat losses on the island over the past six months suggests that perhaps this is just a temporary state of affairs.

"These types of events have real, tangible consequences an
